Welcome to Cape Town

Welcome to Cape Town. Statue of Nelson Mandela

Well as I departed the Cape Town airport on the city bus I could not help but notice many Townships immediately including one along with several horses taking a drink in a ravine by a road beside one of them.

During my first night I was warned of the tricks many guys use to steal one’s cellphone. Upon my nightly walk I saw many guys standing around that could possibly fit this description so I excercised my normal security protocols being aware of this. The city itself is very walkable and their are many security personnel along the streets past midnight. Of course there are less of them you venture farther outside from the restaurant/bar area within the Cape Town Business District. My 1st night came to a close without any incidents.

The next day here on Friday, I decided it was time to start my trip with one of the Free Walking Tours. I did the Apartheid to Freedom Tour in particular. The tour took my walking tour group to several places such as the Supreme Court, Parliament, and District 6. My tour guide explained how the government put in racist laws to benefit whites only.

Along the tour, my guide also explained how in certain terms that South Africa was similiar to current day North Korea and that South Africa was a big exporter of uranium to England during apartheid days. The tour itself gave me a better background on South Africa which added to the knowledge I already had. This tour lasted 90 minutes and my guide advised a few restsurants to checkout including world renowned Charly’s Bakery. I did check it out later in which I had a piece of the double chocolate cheesecake in case you were wondering.

To cap off the evening, I decided to meetup with a local guide from Showaround. She took me on a walking tour through Greenpoint and Waterfront where we strolled around this mix development. The area consisted of retail shops, corporate offices, tour boats, etc. We commenced the evening with dinner at Ocean Basket which had a short queue which tells me this is the spot to go to since the locals go there.
