Big Rock

El Penon. Big Rock

This time around in Medellin I wanted to go to places I had never been during my previous stay so I journeyed to Guatape. The star attraction in Guatape is the big rock aka “El PeƱol”. The route to Guatape can easily be managed by booking through a travel operator in Medellin or just taking the bus from Terminal Norte in Medellin. The one-way bus ticket is currently 18.000 COP which is a perfect recommendation here in my budget travel blog for the solo travel.

Once in the town of Guatape, you have excursion options such as a yacht cruise, jet skis, kayaking, and other water sports. To get to El Penon, you need to take a short tuk tuk drive a few miles away. Entrance to climb El Penon is 20.000 COP which is perfect for solo budget travel. There are helicopter tours available too. I saw the helicopter take off and land a couple of times while flying over El Penon and the Guatape area. I chose the less expensive option which gives just as good of a view when you reach the top of the stairs to El Penon. Another great thing about reaching the top is that there are restaurants and retail shops to encounter before you descend back down.

All in all, Guatape has a lot to offer and is perfect for a family day getaway.
