Into The Cu Chi Tunnels

Into The Cu Chi Tunnels. Lady entering an underground tunnel.

Today marked my 2nd day in Saigon and my last full day in Vietnam. The last tour that I came to this city for was into the Cu Chi Tunnels. These tunnels were a system of tunnels used during the Vietnam War to hide from U.S. troops.

My tourguide named Lam, who works for Pioneer Travel told my tour group that he had family members that fought for North Vietnam and for South Vietnam. Lam was excellent in that he gave us history as well as taught us a few Vietnamese words to use during our visit in the country while in transit to the tunnels. The tour itself included a visit to a local artwork gallery before proceeding to the tunnels. Lam showed us a variety of traps and hiding places used in the war to prevent being detected by U.S. soldiers.

All in all the tour was a great history lesson from Lam’s teaching and very much hands-on as we were able to go into 2 tunnels underground. By the way, there is a shooting range on the estate of the tunnels should you wish to shoot an AK 47, M16, and other rifles used in the military.
